ok I got a chance to buy a JD 850 2WD,no P/S with approx 750 hrs with A 4' brushog? Good deal or not? I can't find anything close to that in this area unless I buy a grey market machine ( which I dont really wanna do)....a friend of mine has it and it is in good shape ( no leaks,etc) Would ya'll go for it or not?Keith

The way I figure it, anything that gets anyone that excited has got to be worthpursuing. If I just saw the tractor out there and didn't know the history I'd say that itis an average deal....maybe a little above average, but basically a fair price. One thing is for sure: With a 2wd 850 with 750 hours on it, it is going to last for as long as you have it. Those things are bulletproof reliable. Roger L ....

Looked at a few 850's before I bought a 750. The 850's I saw were in the $6200 to $7500 range. The one I saw for $6200 had a finish mower with it, and that tractor also had a loud roar coming from the rear end when I drove it. Not a good thing for the gears in it! I would say that $6000 for the one your friend has is a pretty good price. Don't really see how you could do too much better. The 650/750/850/950/1050 series are a great series of tractors, mostly built in the 80's. I have come to really like mine a bunch. Only wish I could get more implements for it right now to make it do more! That 850 might be better suited with a 5 foot bushog. I run a 4 foot on mine and it will run a 5 foot, but that makes it a light on the front end. That would be up to you if you bought it, though. The Hotline Farmers Equip. Guide says the 850 is rated at 22.2 pto hp and weighs about 3225 lbs. You can figure the engine is about 25-26 hp. The low price for '78 is $3746 and the 88 is $7712, and the average is $5603, according to that guide. If I were you, I'd go for it! Good luck....Keith ....

Well fellas,I got disappointed today.I went to the bank and got the 6000,hooked up the 'ol 16 foot trailer,and went to take delivery.What a disappointment.Seat all ripped up,889 hours on the clock,someone had crashed it into a tree and mangled the hood all up,it didn't have any leaks,but it smoked pretty badly ( I thought anyway),and I heard a distinct gear whine from the rear end.And to top it all off the 3pt wouldn't stay up,you either had to bind the engine on the pump to keep it up or it fell pretty quickly. Also the deal changed. I would no longer get the brushhog with it but I would get two blades,a box and a very lightweight grader blade.Needless to say I am off to look at the grey market Yanmars. I am looking at a YM 2500 the clone of the JD 850. I can swing one of those for less than 5k and have a grand left for the finish mower.Thanks to all esp you Keith for the info.It was very useful. If anyone has any ideas on the Yanmars please let me know...(as far as parts avalibility,experences,etc)Thanks all,KeithPicayune,MS ....

Let me go back to your original description. The part where "a friend of minehas it and it is in good shape (no leaks, etc)" Neither the tractor -nor the "friend" - sound like they match your firstdescription. This must have been a heck of a disapointment! I've had my little Yanmar for about 18 years now. And I just bought anotherone this weekend because I like them...and because I always wanted one of thissize. It is in good shape, but not particularly inexpensive compared to othercompacts. I did look at several other tractors....including the new Deeres. For my money, the other compact manufacturers have yet to beat the older Yanmars. I particularly like the Power-shift feature, the 4 reverse speeds, themethod of driving the front axles, the very quiet and solid engine, the integralpower steering, the factory loader's geomety and breakout force (3600 lbs), and something I have a hard time describing....but I call it "balance" I measure itby how familiar the tractor "feels" when I first test it out. Not all of thesefeatures are important to all people...And although Yanmar built tractors for John Deere, Deere chose not to license all of Yanmar's best technology. If you compare the John Deere compacts with their Yanmar counterparts, theYanmar has more advanced features. As far as parts for useed tractors however, you just can't beat JD...Although in fairness, my 18 year old Yanmar has never needed any parts. I order filters a two at a time and always keep spares onhand. The tractor lives in a shed, and engine oil is changed once a year;transmission/hydraulic oil is changed every 5 years or so... Regarding a rear finish mower. I took delivery of my new New Holland TC 18 Boomer yesterday. I got a Woods RD6000, 60" rear discharge, rear mount finish mower and it does an awesome job! Mowed my 2 1/2 acre yard yesterday in way less time than with my Allis Chalmers 16 hp 48" deck - and a better quality cut too. I wasn't sure about the rear mount at first but I got the hang of it pretty easily. You wouldn't go wrong with this deck, good luck. Jim ....
